The signs were all around us: the knotty, urbane films of Spike Lee the punkish bravado of Fishbone all the artsy, middle-class kids exploring identities that weren’t beholden to readymade signifiers like “Africa and jazz.” This would be a generation of “cultural mulattos,” postmodern children of the multicultural age who were comfortable in a variety of settings, a kind of hopeful, flexible, and self-empowered embodiment of W. Ellis believed that the coming decade demanded a new, eclectic approach to African-American cultural expression, one that would reckon with the full continuum of the black experience, from the city to the suburbs. In 1989, the writer and filmmaker Trey Ellis published a concise, manifesto-like essay titled “The New Black Aesthetic.” His argument was fairly straightforward and, in retrospect, perhaps its significance was the fact that he had to write it at all.

Hardy used complex sentence structures and unusual but interesting language. The book is written in very traditional and, at times, hard to understand English. Many of the other characters are also complex, and I think that the way Hardy portayed and developed them all was one of my favourite parts of the book. By the end of the book she had earned my respect and I really felt like she had grown and become a much stronger individual. Obviously you can't help but feel sorry her - some truly awful things fall upon her - however I don't think I felt as sympathetic towards her as many other people have and will. I found her weak and irritating, wondering why she could never just take control of a situation, stand up for what she believed in or do something for herself. By the end of the book I felt like I could really relate to her and understand her, however at the start of the book I felt very differently. Tess Durbeyfield is the main character in the book and you see her grow as a person over several years. Tess of the D'urbervilles is an epic tale telling the tragic life of Tess Durbeyfield and her disasters in love, her tear-wrenching experiences with death and her painstaking efforts to grow into a 'proper' woman. The teacher is in a roll that grants them authority and value, and their responsibility is to recite information to the students. The relationship among teacher and student, Freire argues, is a strict vertical hierarchy. The text begins by addressing the dichotomy of teacher and student, then spends quite a deal of time describing the current common mode of teaching, what the author calls the “banking concept of education”, followed by what the author suggests as a replacement to that method. The topic discussed is the failings of the educational system with regards to the freedom of thought left to students after they’ve completed their studies. It’s easy to understand why this is the first piece of reading a teacher might assign. I have read other books by this author and have enjoyed them all. Will a tsunami hit?
